Rowby-John Rodriguez caused a major upset by defeating reigning champion Luke Humphries 5-3 on the opening day of the 2024 Mr Vegas Grand Slam of Darts in Wolverhampton. Despite Humphries’ impressive 164 checkout in the penultimate leg, Rodriguez sealed the win with a stunning 141 finish. Other notable performances included Gary Anderson, who averaged 113 in a dominant 5-1 win over Ryan Joyce, and Luke Littler, who averaged 112 to defeat Keane Barry in just under seven minutes.
The opening day also featured exciting displays from Gian van Veen, Stephen Bunting, and Michael Smith, who all secured wins in their respective groups. The action continued with debutants such as Martin Lukeman and Connor Scutt making strong impressions, while veteran players like Anderson and Van Gerwen looked in excellent form.
