Gordon Mathers is set to return to the Paddy Power World Darts Championship this December after claiming victory at the DPA Oceanic Masters on Sunday. Having competed in the World Championship three times before, this win marks Mathers’ first appearance at Alexandra Palace in three years. The 43-year-old had a strong tournament, starting with straight-sets victories over Brian Corbett and Craig Caldwell, followed by three consecutive 3-1 wins, including matches against New Zealand’s Mark Cleaver in the quarter-finals and rising star Jaymie Hilton-Jones in the semi-finals.
In the final, Mathers initially dropped the first leg but quickly gained momentum, winning six of the next seven legs to establish a two-set lead over Harley Kemp. Kemp managed to take the third set in a decider, but Mathers closed out the match with a 3-1 victory in the fourth set. “I knew I had to take my chances in the final and I did just that,” said Mathers, expressing his excitement for the upcoming championship. He will be joined at the World Darts Championship by DPA Order of Merit winner Joe Comito and DPNZ Qualifier Ben Robb.
