As the 2024/25 World Darts Championship approaches, PDC Stats Analyst Christopher Kempf delves into players’ career success in World Championship set-deciding legs. These high-pressure moments, where a player can lose all progress from winning two legs, require exceptional mental strength. Phil Taylor, despite winning nearly 65% of his career legs, performed below his usual standard in deciding legs with only a 61.7% success rate. Meanwhile, Michael van Gerwen has excelled in these moments, winning 12 of 15 deciding legs in his last two World Championship appearances, maintaining a strong performance against the throw in last legs.
Rob Cross, known for his strong debut performance, won 11 of 15 deciders in his first World Championship and has maintained a solid record in deciding legs. Kim Huybrechts stands out with a remarkable 68.3% win rate in set-deciding legs, the highest among active players who have contested at least 10 World Championships. On the other hand, Daryl Gurney has struggled in this area, winning only 36% of his 56 deciding legs. Luke Littler, though early in his career, is already setting impressive records with a 105.69 average in deciding legs during his 2024 World Championship run, suggesting he may soon become a dominant force in these pressure situations.
