Michael van Gerwen kicked off his bid for a fourth World Darts Championship title with a dominant 3-0 win over James Hurrell, showcasing his precision with nine out of eighteen double attempts. The Dutchman, known for his excellent record at Alexandra Palace, sealed his place in the third round with solid performances, including two ton-plus checkouts. Van Gerwen expressed satisfaction with his performance, despite acknowledging not having the best 12 months in his career.
Stephen Bunting also advanced to the third round, overcoming Kai Gotthardt after the German missed three darts for a two-set lead. Bunting capitalized on this and won seven consecutive legs to secure the victory. Other notable performances included Wessel Nijman’s dramatic 3-2 win over Cameron Carolissen, Florian Hempel’s 3-1 success against Jeffrey de Zwaan, and Dylan Slevin’s victory over William O’Connor. The day also saw Ian White receive a bye after Sandro Eric Sosing withdrew on medical grounds.
