Daryl Gurney delivered a stunning performance at the BoyleSports World Grand Prix, whitewashing six-time champion Michael van Gerwen 6-0 in a dominant first-round display. Gurney, a former champion, hit six out of nine finishing doubles to secure a last-16 spot against Joe Cullen. Gurney’s victory was part of a series of upsets on Day Two, as Michael Smith and Peter Wright also bowed out. Smith fell to 2016 runner-up Gary Anderson in a dramatic last-leg decider, while two-time champion James Wade fought back to defeat Wright, winning six of the last seven legs.
Elsewhere, Gerwyn Price came through a tense five-set battle against Danny Noppert, recovering after Noppert’s late fightback. Dimitri Van den Bergh returned to form with a win over Luke Woodhouse, averaging 97 and landing five 180s, while Mike De Decker ousted Damon Heta in a gripping contest. Dave Chisnall also breezed through with a 6-0 whitewash against Cameron Menzies in the evening’s opener. The second round begins Wednesday, with reigning champion Luke Humphries continuing his title defense.
