Wessel Nijman produced a nerveless display to overcome a heroic Gerwyn Price and secure his fourth PDC ranking title at Players Championship Two in Hildesheim on Tuesday.
The pair dominated the 2025 Players Championship circuit and reaffirmed their class at Halle 39, where Nijman claimed the £15,000 top prize despite Price averaging a remarkable 107.41 in the final. The contest went to a deciding leg, with Nijman’s composure proving decisive as he averaged 102.78 to seal victory.
The Dutchman made a fast start with three 14-darters to lead 3-1, before Price responded, aided by a 144 checkout, to level at 3-3. The Welshman then hit an 11-darter and a sublime 121 on the bull to move 6-5 ahead, only for Nijman to respond with a 12-dart break. After trading holds, Nijman struck a brilliant 171 and returned to take out 94 for the title.
“To win a final like this, when Gerwyn pushes you to the limit, it means a lot,” said Nijman. “I am really happy with the way I played today. I’m getting close to the top 24 now but I want to improve a lot.
“I want to be in the top 16 and I want to improve in the big games.
“I’ve said it before in Dutch television interviews; you cannot be playing like this on the floor without it happening on the big stages.
“I’m not really worried about not performing on the big stage; I think it’s just a matter of time.”
Nijman’s run included dominant wins over Cor Dekker, Carl Sneyd and Ryan Searle. Price, meanwhile, posted a staggering tournament average of 105.69, highlighted by a 117.12 average whitewash of Michael van Gerwen and a 111.14 display against Luke Woodhouse, but ultimately fell just short in a thrilling final.
