Ware Backs Forces Darts Development with Emotional Falklands Visit

PDC referee Huw Ware has reflected on a deeply personal and unforgettable visit to the Falkland Islands, where he helped support the growth of darts within the Armed Forces while accompanying his father on an emotional return to the site of the 1982 conflict.

Ware’s trip followed his involvement earlier this year in an exhibition aboard HMS Queen Elizabeth, marking darts’ recognition as an official Armed Forces sport. That appearance led to an invitation from the British Forces South Atlantic Islands (BFSAI) to assist with the launch of the Mount Pleasant Complex Darts Club.

During the visit, Ware presented Winmau dartboards, stands, lighting and equipment to help establish the club, while also supporting a military dog unit with a donated dartboard. Contributions from Bullseye further enhanced the exhibition, providing prizes and the official Bully costume.

A highlight of the trip came in Port Stanley, where Ware officiated the final of the Seafish Chandlery Open, a major local event with 125 entrants. He also called a 180 during the final, believed to be among the most southerly ever recorded, underlining the sport’s popularity on the islands.

The visit carried special significance for Ware’s father, who served aboard HMS Antelope during the Falklands War. Together, they visited San Carlos Bay to see the remains of the vessel, before his father later addressed troops about his wartime experiences and was presented with a Falklands Veterans scarf.

Beyond darts, Ware took part in darts-themed circuit training with BFSAI personnel, toured HMS Forth and a military A400 aircraft, and joined a Met Office balloon release that reached an altitude of 89,347 feet.

The trip concluded with Ware expressing gratitude to BFSAI staff for their hospitality, while reaffirming his commitment to helping the Mount Pleasant Complex Darts Club thrive as darts continues to grow within the Armed Forces.
